Mafa Makhubalo

Artistic Director, Dancer, Choreographer

His choreography has been presented by a variety of presenters, most notably, at the Ontario Dance Weekend, International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), Body Percussion Festival, dance Immersion showcases, TEADA 2019 CUBA, Fall for Dance North (FFDN) Signature Program in 2020, the Contemporaneity Series 1.0, and the Toronto International Dance Festival 2019/2020. He was invited for the 2008 Choreographers Lab program at the Jacob's Pillow School (Lee, Ma, USA), the 2009 apprenticeship program at Stagecraft and the Six Week Dance program at American Dance Festival (Durham, NC, USA). 

When not on stage, Mafa actively participates in grassroots community mentorship opportunities to help youth realize their potential through the arts. Furthermore, he has been invovled with the Yonge People Theatre, Vibes Arts, resident choreographer with Canada's Ballet Jörgen from 2020 - 2021, Theatre Passe Muraille 11:11 production 2020-2021, TDT Pilot Episode, recipient of the Ontario-Quebec cohort program 2019-2021 presented by (La DSR) La danse sur les routes du Québec and Ontario Presents. He was a guest choreographer for Canada's Ballet Jörgen's Solos & Duets and Summer Intensive program annual series from 2013 - 2017 and the Toronto Rhythm Initiative Summer Youth Intensive workshop after school program for Arts Start.

Starting at a young age, Mafa Makhubalo is no stranger to dance which has been deeply interwoven throughout his life and practice. His naturally gifted talents and passion led his successful artistic journey to be the founder and artistic director of Mafa Dance Village. Born in Sasolburg, South Africa, Mafa trained professionally in movement poet, with practices in folk forms from the regions of African tradition, African contemporary, and West-Contemporary. 

Mafa enrolled in the Arts Management program at Centennial College (Toronto). He trained with the Ballet Creole School of the Arts (Toronto) and received the National Diploma in dance from Tshwane University of Technology (South Africa). As an emerging dance artist, Mafa trained under Tony Campbell, founder and director of ZAPAC (Zamdela Performing Arts Centre) in South Africa. After moving to Canada, to continue his life-long pursuit of dance, where he collaborated with other respectable choreographers, including Milton Myers, Danny Grossman, Debbie Wilson, Gabby Kamino. He was also a member of COBA company (Collective Of Black Artist), Ballet Creole, OMO Dance Company, and Nyata-nyata in Montreal.
